Abaco Island is where Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas on September 1, 2019.
I spent 6 days documenting hurricane relief efforts for a nonprofit called Heart 911. Our crew was made up of union carpenters from NYC and Boston, sent there as volunteers to repair and rebuild damaged houses. Working alongside tireless locals, we managed to get three large roofs patched and watertight, and were rewarded with watching a family move back into their home by boat as we were finishing up. It was an eye opening experience I won’t soon forget.
